Adults suffering from treatment-resistant depression or depressive symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD) with suicidal thoughts or actions may be eligible for Spravato®. Intramuscular Ketamine is also aimed at individuals struggling with depression, especially those who have not found relief through traditional treatments. Both treatments require an initial consultation to determine eligibility based on medical history and current health status.
Common side effects for both treatments may include nausea, transient increases in blood pressure, and dissociation. These are typically mild and managed on-site by our trained staff. Our team will monitor you closely during and after treatment to manage any side effects effectively.
Regardless of the treatment option chosen, patients can expect to be in a comfortable, controlled environment designed for safety and relaxation. For Spravato® treatments, the patient self-administers the nasal spray under clinical supervision. Intramuscular Ketamine treatments involve a healthcare professional administering the injection. In both cases, patients are observed for a period after administration to monitor for any side effects and to ensure safety. The sessions typically last between 2 to 3 hours, during which vital signs are closely monitored.
Spravato® is a nasal spray form of esketamine, a molecule closely related to ketamine, specifically approved by the FDA for treatment-resistant depression when used alongside an oral antidepressant. Intramuscular Ketamine is administered via injection directly into the muscle, allowing for rapid absorption and effect. Both methods aim to provide quick relief from depressive symptoms, but their administration routes, insurance coverage, and some aspects of patient experience differ.
Ketamine is a medication primarily used for starting and maintaining anesthesia. However, it has been found to have rapid-acting antidepressant effects in patients with depression, particularly in those who have not responded to conventional treatments. Ketamine works by binding to NMDA receptors in the brain, leading to an increase in the production of a neurotransmitter called glutamate. This then triggers a cascade of changes in the brain that affect mood regulation and depression symptoms.
